An unpublished portrait of Josef Koudelka this evening on ARTE
To coincide with the exhibition “Josef Koudelka – La fabrique d’exils” which Is being shown at the Pompidou Centre from February 22nd to May 22nd 2017, ARTE is presenting a previously unseen portrait of the famous photographer.
After growing up behind the iron curtain, the Czech photographer, Josef Koudelka became famous thanks to his iconic photos of the invasion of Prague by Warsaw Pact troops in 1968. Almost 50 years later, he was deeply moved to discover the nine-metre-high wall built by Israel in the West Bank.
This started a four years photographic project in the region, during which the image hunter confronted the harsh reality of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. From one spectacular location to another, the director Gilad Baram, then assistant to Josef Koudelka (who allowed himself to be filmed for the first time), followed him on his journey in the Holy Land.
