Companion Botanical Closeup: Helichrysum
There are over 600 species in the Helichrysum genus, a member of the Asteraceae family. It takes it name from the Greek “helios” meaning sun and “chrysos” meaning gold, a tribute to the radiant, golden flowers exhibited by many of the species within the genus. We utilize the essential oil of the species Helichrysum italicum, also known as Immortelle, in both our CVD 1:1 Salve and our Ceres Natural Remedies Hemp Infused Salve. This species is known for its broad therapeutic functions, most notably it’s analgesic and anti-inflammatory qualities. It also contains high levels of neryl acetate, a compound that supports the regeneration of cells and tissue, a main reason why it has been traditionally used to promote healthy formation of scar tissue. Reputed to support the multiplication of the skin’s natural collagen count, you can also find Helichrysum prevalent in cosmetic skin care formulations, where uses include wrinkle reduction and the promotion of healthy skin.
Fun Fact: Helichrsyum is one of the more expensive essential oils because of the labor and quantity of biomass involved in production: one ton of hand harvested helichrysum flowering tops yields approximately one kilo of essential oil.
